When a “Good Battery” Isn’t Actually the Right Battery

What followed was a detailed diagnostic process that uncovered a less obvious, but increasingly common problem in modern vehicles — a mismatch between battery technology and the vehicle’s charging system.

The first step was to confirm whether the vehicle’s charging system was functioning correctly.

Initial Charging System & Battery Assessment

Testing showed the alternator producing 14.2 volts at idle, which is well within the expected range for a modern smart alternator system. This confirmed that the charging system itself was operating as designed and not the cause of the issue.

Attention then turned to the battery. The installed unit, a Calcium-type battery, had been slow-charged overnight to ensure accurate testing conditions. After charging, it delivered 472 cold cranking amps (CCA) against a rated 600 CCA, with a state of charge at approximately 80%.

While the battery was still operational, these results indicated significant internal degradation, especially considering its relatively recent installation. This raised concerns that something external was accelerating its deterioration

To rule out excessive power draw as the cause of repeated failures, a parasitic draw test was conducted. With the vehicle in sleep mode, an initial draw of approximately 300 milliamps was recorded — far above the expected level of around 25 milliamps for this vehicle.

The next step was systematic isolation. An aftermarket dashcam was disconnected, and the current draw immediately dropped to 24 milliamps, which is within normal limits. Additional testing confirmed that other accessories, including a CarPlay dongle, had no impact on the draw.

To verify the result, the vehicle’s electrical system was reactivated and allowed to return to sleep mode. With the dashcam still disconnected, the draw stabilised again at 24 milliamps.

This confirmed that all factory systems were functioning correctly and entering sleep mode as intended. The excessive drain was linked specifically to the aftermarket dashcam, not the vehicle itself.

While the parasitic draw explained some battery stress, it did not fully account for the rapid battery degradation. The underlying issue became clear after reviewing the battery type fitted to the vehicle.

The Hyundai Tucson in question is designed to operate with EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) or AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) technology, as specified by the manufacturer. However, the vehicle had been fitted with a standard Calcium battery, which is not suited to this application.

Further investigation across multiple industry suppliers — including Century, Repco, Napa, Supercharge and Alco — confirmed that AGM batteries are consistently recommended for this model.

The problem lies in how modern smart alternators operate. These systems use higher and more variable voltage charging strategies to improve efficiency and support advanced vehicle electronics. While EFB and AGM batteries are engineered to handle this charging profile, standard Calcium batteries are not.

As a result, the incorrect battery type is subjected to excessive charging stress, causing internal damage over time. This leads to reduced performance, shortened lifespan, and ultimately repeated failure — a process often described as the battery being “overworked” or prematurely worn out.

Battery Replacement 
The existing Calcium battery should be replaced with the correct EFB or AGM battery to match the vehicle’s smart alternator system. This ensures compatibility with the charging profile and restores long-term reliability.
